They were unveiled on the same day, April 12.

The first one, ‘The Beginning of the Space Era: Aviation as a Pillar’ is available at the Lobachevsky Library. It shows pictures from aviation training starting from the 1930s and up to spacefaring endeavors of the 1960s. The expo includes original posters from the Second World War which were carefully preserved at the Library, as well as materials on civil aviation. It will be in showing until September 1.

Another exhibition, ‘University. Space. Universe’, was opened at the Marble Hallway of the Second Building. The ceremony was visited by Vice-Rector for Education Dmitry Tayursky, Director of University Museums Svetlana Frolova, and renowned space technology researcher Ural Zakirov. The exhibits cover Kazan University’s extensive history of space science, starting from the first day of the University’s functioning in 1804 – the department of astronomy was one of the original entities in its structure. Here, among other things, prospective students can learn more about current astronomy programs at our University. The exhibition, set to continue until August, was prepared by Kazan University’s History Museum, Engelhardt Observatory, Lobachevsky Library, and Institute of Physics.

The opening was to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s first spaceflight.

The ceremony was held by the president of the Russia-Cuba Friendship Society, Deputy Minister of Finance of Russia Aleksey Lavrov and Rector of Kazan Federal University Ilshat Gafurov.

Yuri Gagarin was the first President of the Russia-Cuba Friendship Society, and Mr. Lavrov is the sixth. Lavrov is a good friend of Kazan Federal University; his parents worked here.

In his greeting, he mentioned that such an expo was unveiled simultaneously at 130 locations across Russia. However, the Kazanian expo is the only one to have been placed at an observatory.

The guest also gave Dr. Gafurov a commemorative token of the Russia-Cuba Friendship Society to mark Kazan University’s immense contributions to space science and Russian-Cuban cooperation.

This expo is one in the line of events leading the Engelhardt Observatory’s 120th anniversary celebration in September 2021. Apart from photos, it includes a documentary chronicling Gagarin’s hugely successful visit to Cuba in 1961. Interestingly, the documentary was demonstrated on the University Planetarium’s dome screen.

Rector Gafurov mentioned that there are big plans to expand and improve the Observatory’s infrastructure, “Behind the Planetarium, a new study hall is under construction for students. We have to also build a dormitory and a canteen. It’s all in the plans, and we move towards that. The construction will be completed before the Observatory’s anniversary. There will also be an advanced training center for astronomy teachers.”

As we have mentioned previously, KFU’s observatory complex is currently being nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List. The nomination is supported by many professionals, including ex-Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova.

The expo, comprising over 40 photos of Gagarin’s trip to the Island of Freedom in July 1961, is planned for demonstration in over 60 Russian and Cuban location.

Open Lab Gene and Cell Technologies has presented its new research.

Lead Research Associate Yelena Zakirova commented, “Our lab has created a new genetic plasmid compound which stimulates the production of family-specific proteins in felines and thus accelerates regeneration of skin, muscle, and tendon tissue. We used the genes of fibroblast growth factors and vascular endothelial growth factors.”

The product has completed preclinical and clinical trials and is now ready for patent procedures.

“Earlier, we developed and patented similar injection compounds for persisting wounds in horses and dogs. They have already proven their effectiveness and are used by veterinarians. All genetic medications use approximately the same scheme because animals have similar regeneration mechanisms,” says the scientist.

Lab employees are currently seeking to create a regeneration compound for humans.
