6th Conference of Mathematical Centers of Russia wrapped up

It was organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Regional Scientific and Educational Mathematical Center of the Volga Federal District, and Kazan Federal University. During the closing day, 22nd August, researchers presented plenary reports, and a discussion took place.

Vadim Lisitsa, Head of a Laboratory at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk), presented his paper Numerical Modeling in Geophysics. According to the scientist, the method is used in energy, geology, and other fields.

“It is used in exploration geophysics, greenhouse gas monitoring, and hydrogen injection and storage,” he said.

Yury Belov, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at St. Petersburg State University, presented a paper entitled Gabor Frames: Recent Achievements and Prospects. The speaker discussed a mathematical tool with practical applications in information coding, signal processing, data analysis, and quantum mechanics.

“For example, you have music. You want to store it in the smallest possible memory space, but still want it to sound natural when played back, without quality loss or artifacts. These are two opposing goals that need to be reconciled. To achieve this, you need to turn to coding for good compression,” the researcher explained.

Sergey Shestakov, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematical Foundations of Control at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), spoke on the topic Unexpected Mathematics in Spaceflight Dynamics Problems. One of the practical applications is satellite control, which, in turn, enables imaging of the Earth’s surface and the collection of various data and measurements.

RAS Academician Sergey Bezrodnykh summarized the event and thanked the organizers. He particularly highlighted the role of Marat Arslanov, Head of the Department of Algebra and Mathematical Logic at the Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics and Academic Director of the Volga Federal District Mathematical Research and Education Center, in organizing the conference. Bezrodnykh also added that the event responds to the challenges of the times and represents all areas of mathematical science developing in Russia, from deep theory to serious practice.

“These days were absolutely wonderful. We were able to learn from each other and discover many new things,” the scientist said.

According to data provided by Sergey Ilyin, Associate Professor of the Department of Algebra and Mathematical Logic, 561 people from 45 cities and 4 countries attended the conference. A total of approximately 800 applications were submitted.

The event began on August 17. During this time, experienced and emerging researchers have become familiar with the latest trends, cutting-edge methods, and innovative approaches shaping the future of science.
