KFU represented at 2024 International Petroleum Technology Conference in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Chair of the Department of Petroleum Engineering Mikhail Varfolomeev visited the event on 12 – 14 February.

Over the past few days, Saudi Arabia has become a center of attraction for energy representatives, oil and gas industry leaders and academia. Participants of the event got an opportunity to exchange experience and professional views on current topics and trends in the industry, familiarize themselves with the latest technologies and innovations, and develop cooperation and joint projects in the energy sector.

The event brought together 7,000 experts from 150 countries. Kazan Federal University, was among the Russian participants.

The plenary sessions were attended by members of the royal family, heads of leading oil and gas and energy companies. The agenda of the sessions covered the issues of geology, geophysics, exploration, evaluation, development and production of oil and gas resources, as well as processing, storage and transportation of oil and natural gas. Special attention was paid to climate and environmental changes, unconventional oil and gas sources, exploration and production integration, as well as a number of industry-wide issues. KFU’s Center for Liquid Hydrocarbons spoke about its research of countering gas breakouts at producing wells with a partner.

“Today this topic is very relevant, especially because the development of oil rims of gas fields is underway. And for such objects, very often gas breakthrough on producing wells appear as a complication. A systematic work from laboratory research to modeling and pilot application on objects was carried out. The work was done jointly with Gazpromneft,” said Mikhail Varfolomeev.

Dr Varfolomeev showed the results of application of foam-gel compositions for gas inflow control. This technology effectively protects oil wells from gas breakthrough.

At the closing ceremony, awards were presented to organizations that made technical and business contributions to the industry. In total, more than 150 plenary and technical sessions were held.

The main partner of the conference was Saudi Aramco. Other sponsors included industry organizations such as the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
