KFU unveils first in-house national ranking of universities’ role in regional development

This new ranking differs from the already existing Russian rankings.

The focus has been on the universities’ effectivieness in their local communities and provinces and their contribution to regional development. Global positioning and competitiveness have not been considered for the purposes of this new ranking.

The methodology comprises seven categories: Regional Education, Regional Science and Innovation, Reputational Economy, Social Development of a Region, Infrastructural Contributions, Digital Economy, and Human Potential.

Many open sources were used, including data from the Federal Service of Statistics, Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, Ministry of Sports of Russia, Ministry of Digital Development of Russia, and other providers.

Overall, 679 institutions were ranked. Understandably, Moscow is the most represented in the top 100 with 12 universities, Saint-Petersburg has 5, and Tomsk Oblast – 4. Among the top 100, there are 67 participants of the Priority 2030 program. The top five overall are Moscow State University, Kazan Federal University, Far Eastern Federal University, Saint-Petersburg State University, and Ural Federal University.
