University’s most senior employee Valerian Garanin commended on his 95th birthday
A ceremony was held on 1 June.
On his anniversary, Dr Valerian Garanin, Candidate of Science (PhD) in Biology, Associate Professor, Distinguished Ecologist of Tatarstan, Engineer of the Zoological Museum, was given a certificate of appreciation by Rector Lenar Safin.
Dr Garanin is one of renowned Russian herpetologists. After graduating from KFU in 1952, he worked in various positions as a researcher and public official and received his PhD degree in 1965.
Since 1970, he has worked at the Faculty of Biology and Soil Science of Kazan University, including stints as Chair of the Department of Environmental Protection (1980 – 1986) and Deputy Dean (1986 – 2009).
Among Garanin’s research interests are environmental zoology, herpetology, environmental protection, and history of science. Garanin has co-authored over 350 papers, including 30 books on amphibians and reptiles, local natural reserves, biomes of the Kama region, and biographical works.
He has contributed to the Red List of Endangered Species of Tatarstan and has been an organizer of many scientific expeditions to the Volga-Kama Natural Reserve.
Valerian Garanin is a corresponding member of the International Academy of Teacher Education and an honorary member of the Russian Society of Environmental Protection and Russian Herpetological Society.
Among his awards are Medal of Meritorious Labor (1970), Medal of Labor Merit (1979), Medal of Veteran of Labor (1984), Lapel Pin of Distinguished Worker of Education of Russia (2018), and Lapel Pin of Distnguished Ecologist of Tatarstan (2018).
Dr Garanin currently works at KFU’s Zoological Museum.
