Cosmonautics Day celebrated at Kazan University

On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space; his flight lasted for 1 hour and 48 minutes.

Traditionally, Kazan University holds numerous events to celebrate one of the most beloved holidays in Russia.

This year, Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory held free tours about the history of astronomy in Kazan and the history of the Observatory, showing, among other things, old telescopes and astronomical instruments.

In the Observatory building, a little expo was opened under the name ‘The Wonderful World of Space.’ Kids from across Russia submitted their drawings and handicrafts to the exhibition. They were awarded in four nominations.

Acting Rector Dmitry Tayursky addressed the children, “In your art, you reflected your own ideas about this great endeavor. Hopefully, when you grow up, some of you will also dedicate yourselves to the exploration of space.”

KFU Planetarium was also involved in the celebrations by showing spherical films and providing access to its telescopes.
