Innovative animal shampoo presented by KFU chemist

Assistant Lecturer Semyon Romanov has already been commended at local industry fairs for his research.

The project is funded by a Russian Science Foundation grant titled ‘Synthesis and structure of onium salts with antibacterial and antimycotic properties to create an agent for the treatment of eye diseases in domestic and farm animals’.

Romanov explains, “In 2020, according to the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision, 382 foci of infectious diseases among farm animals were registered in Russia. The problem of developing new domestic drugs for veterinary medicine in our country is very pertinent. Under the guidance of the Chair of the Department, Associate Professor Yulia Bakhtiyarova, and Professor Irina Galkina, I am looking for new structures that have antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties. Together with microbiologists of the Kazan State Medical Academy, we are studying the antimicrobial activity of these compounds. Based on the most successful of them, we develop pharmaceutical compositions that we then test on animals with colleagues at the Kazan State Academy of Veterinary Medicine.”

In 2021, the scientist and his colleagues produced test samples of an antimicrobial and acaricide shampoo. It has been presented at several student contests and startup conventions.

“We now have a lab sample of the shampoo,” he continues. “The shampoo is non-toxic; it comprises a complex of surfactants and an active ingredient containing phosphonium salt and a mixture of substituted benzofuroxans. If I receive a grant from the Student Startup contest, we can launch production.”

As of now, there have been no animal shampoos with combined antimicrobial and acaricide activity in the world. Existing acaricide shampoos and medication are not antimicrobial and have side effects and effectiveness issues.

The young researcher, who has recently defended his PhD thesis, plans to create more veterinary medication in the future.
