Virtual reality app for surgeons in the works by KFU students

The project is a part of the Startup as Diploma initiative.

Within the initiative, proposed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, students can present their startup ideas as a graduation thesis. Many students have already registered for the program, and they will receive feedback from industry experts in June 2022.

Nikita Romanchuk, junior year student of information technology, works on an VR project under the guidance of Lead Research Associate Vlada Kugurakova (Digital Media Lab).

“Our project deals with tracheostomy. It’s a VR app for Oculus Quest 2. Students will be able to learn this procedure step by step thanks to the app,” explains Romanchuk.

3D models of instruments, patient body, and environments create full immersion. The continuity and completeness are controlled by practicing surgeon, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the University Clinic Sergey Zinchenko.

Sergey Romanchuk continues, “We have recently filed an application for intellectual property registration. I want to thank Director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology Andrey Kiyasov and Deputy Director Rashat Fayzullin – they formalized the requirements for this training app and supervised its development in regard to its compatibility with the instruction methodology of the Higher School of Medicine. I want to also express gratitude to Digital Media Lab employees Regina Sharaeva, Murad Khafizov, and Rim Gazizov for their advice and supervision.”
