Volga Basin Sailing University closes another season

Professor Nafisa Mingazova speaks about this year’s journey down the Volga River.

‘Peter Andrianov’ motorboat spent nine days and 850 kilometers on its way from Nizhny Novgorod to Kazan along the Volga River.

“The expedition was organized by the Volga State University of Water Transport (VSUWT),” explains Mingazova. “The participating students were from Kazan Federal University, Lobachevsky University, and Moscow State University. During the sailing, we collected hundreds of samples of water to study its properties. KFU was represented by me, Senior Lecturer Elvira Nabeeva, and four students of water management. We conducted full-scale tests at each of the ten stops. We found out the most problematic river stretches – near the Kazan cargo port and the city’s wastewater outlets.”

The data will further be analyzed by employees and students during the next academic year, adds the Professor.

Volga Basin Sailing University was launched in 2015 to study the changes in the Volga River. Since 2016, it has been financially supported by the Russian Geographical Society.
