Shirley Suárez talks about her artistic endeavors and love for Russian nature

The Second Home project talks about another international student thriving at our University.
Shirley is a third-year student of the Institute of Ecology, Biotechnology and Nature Management from Ecuador. She has achieved considerable success in science. In addition, she is a very creative person and actively participates in cultural events.
Why Kazan University?
The young woman admitted that since childhood she dreamed of studying abroad. Having considered many options, she came to the conclusion that studying in Russia is an excellent opportunity to get a quality education. The parents supported her decision.
“I chose Kazan University because it is one of the best universities in the country. In addition, the major that interested me opened up when I was applying to the university, and this became the reason for my choice,” she notes.
The adaptation period was not easy for Shirley, as she had to get used to completely new conditions and language.
“I come from the Galapagos Islands, so it was almost unreal for me to see snow and feel such low temperatures. It was a real shock,” Shirley says. “Over time, I got used to it, began to communicate more and participate in different activities. Now I feel much more confident.”
Studies and student life
Ms Suárez is interested in science, so she chose biotechnology. The interviewee practices a lot in her profession and is engaged in laboratory research in microbiology and genetics.
She also organizes cultural events, participates in various festivals, dances in the Swing Latino group and is a member of the Association of Latin American Countries in Kazan, where she represents Ecuador.
“I participated in the International Festival and also took part in the Parade of Friendship of Nations. Together with the Swing Latino dance group, we demonstrated our culture at events such as Global Fest and the Bridges of Cultures festival,” she shares.
Traveling and favorite locations
Moscow once made a special impression, combining different architectural styles and modern buildings. Shirley loves nature very much, so in the future she dreams of visiting Vladikavkaz.
The student also has many favorite places in Kazan, to which she always seeks to return.
“I really like the Kremlin embankment and the Uram extreme sports park. It is cozy and calm there, and watching children play, elderly people walk, and young people relax creates a warm and lively atmosphere in which you feel at home,” the heroine muses.
Shirley has not yet decided where she will go after completing her studies, but she admitted that life in our country has certainly had a positive impact on her worldview and allowed her to grow as a person.
