110th anniversary of Academician Semen Altshuler

A number of celebratory events were held on 24 September.

The key celebration took place at the Institute of Physics, where the Laboratory of Mesophysics was officially opened. Lab head, Associate Professor Yegor Alakshin commented, “The lab aims to synthesize nanostructures. It has all the necessary equipment, including two autoclaves, electronic scales, and two centrifuges. Further equipment and furniture is expected soon.”

Director of the Institute of Physics, Vice-Rector for Research Dmitry Tayursky noted that materials science is an integral part of KFU’s strategy for the upcoming Priority 2030 project.

Chair of the Department of Quantum Electronics and Spectroscopy Murat Tagirov reminded that the University has been engaged in crystal growing for many years.

On the same day, an exhibition called ‘Semen Altshuler’s war and peace’ opened at the History Museum in the Main Building. The History Museum, the Zavoisky Museum Laboratory, the Lobachevsky Library and students of the Institute of International Relations contributed to the expo.

Among the storage units displayed here are photos, documents, manuscripts and scientific papers from Altshuler’s archives, an acoustic paramagnetic resonator, personal belongings, awards, and patents.

“Altshuler, at that time already a scientist with a PhD degree, volunteered to go to the Great Patriotic War; he came home in 1946,” said Director of KFU Museum Svetlana Frolova. “He received the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd degree.”

The day also included a flower laying ceremony at the great scientist’s burial site.
