Idzhad Sabitov receives 2021 Lobachevsky Medal and Prize in a grand ceremony

The event took place on 1 December.

The laureate was congratulated by Rector Ilshat Gafurov, Vice-Premier of Tatarstan Leyla Fazleeva, Chairman of the Board Directors of Ak Bars Bank Valery Sorokin, former winner Richard Schoen (2017) by e-mail, jury member Yau Shing-tung via a video message, and others.

The award was first given away in 1895 and was revived several times. The latest re-establishment occurred in 2017, when Dr. Schoen was the triumphant, and continued in 2019, when it was bestowed upon Daniel T. Wise of McGill University. The prize is awarded on odd years.

After witnessing the warm felicitations, Professor Sabitov responded, in particular, “I am happy to be present on this stage today. And I think the same would be true for any scientist should their name become associated with Nikolai Lobachevsky’s name and activities. The Euclidean geometry existed for two thousand years, and no one doubted it. Nikolai Lobachevsky found the courage to dispute it with his brilliant mind and mathematical talent. Since then, the humankind changed its perception of the world. Historically, Lobachevsky became inextricably linked with Kazan University. And I want to wish one of the oldest and most respected Russian universities further development and flourishing.”

After the ceremony, Dr. Sabitov gave a lecture “The second youth of Heron’s formula and the solution to the bellows problem.”
