Kazan University joins Volga Basin Boat University

Six employees boarded a research vessel to survey the Volga and Kama rivers starting June 21.

Apart from the two large rivers, the boat is also studying several tributaries of the Volga, including Kazanka, Vetluga, Oka, Vatoma and Sura.

Chair of the Department of Environmental Engineering Nafisa Mingazova explains, “For several years now, Nizhny Novgorodites have been organizing this expedition on a grant from the Russian Geographical Society. It is attended by students and employees of several universities, including the Volga State University of Water Transport, Nizhny Novgorod State University and Moscow State University. For the second year in a row, students and employees of our department have been participating in the expedition from Kazan University. This summer, Senior Lecturer Elvira Nabeeva, Assistant Lecturer Nail Nazarov, myself and three students joined the floating university. We, like last time, will conduct monitoring studies at the Kazan – Kamskoye Ustye section: study phytoplankton, zooplankton, zoobenthos, take water samples, samples of hydrobionts, and study the processes of self-purification of the river.”

After the completion of the project, the data will be analyzed and published in various papers and course works.

The Floating University initiative aims to boost environmental safety, climatic research, studies of hydrodynamics and water technology.
