Kazan University to establish Center for Regulatory Genomics

Grant funding is going to be provided by the federal budget.

A substantial sum of 318 million rubles will be spread across three years, 2021 to 2023. The official title of the main research project is ‘Regulatory transcriptomics for the evaluation of the potential of genome modification and regeneration studies for animal husbandry.’ Co-recipients of the funding are Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (Russian Academy of Sciences) and Sirius University.

“The center will be opened based on our existing Extreme Biology Lab and Regulatory Genomics Lab,” explains Lead Research Associate of both labs Oleg Gusev. “There will be new labs aimed at studying gene regulation in regeneration models and other adaptive mechanisms in animals. A few years back, we together with RIKEN created the world’s first atlas of genome regulation in a chicken embryo.”

Among the first things to research, as the scientist adds, are genetic control of aggression in various breeds of chicken and molecular mechanisms of regeneration. As a result, a bioinformation system should be created for the optimization of genome modification targeting.

Project participants will have opportunities to intern in Japan, including Juntendo University, Kumamoto University, and RIKEN.
