Kazan Federal University

Megagrant supervisor Hans-Uwe Simon met with Rector Ilshat Gafurov and vice-rectors

The talks were held on July 15.

The sides signed an employment agreement and discussed further actions within the megagrant framework.

The megagrant program was launched in 2010 by the Government of Russia. In 2020, the eighth competition was held, and Kazan Federal University won two biomedical grants, one of which is set to be supervised by Professor Simon (University of Bern). The title of the project is ‘Regulation of the mTOR1 complex in metabolic processes of mitochondria: impact on inflammation and carcinogenesis.’

As the first step in the implementation of the project, KFU established the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology, which Dr. Simon was invited to lead.

The team is going to study the specifics of metabolically reprogrammed mitochondria in naïve, pro-inflammatory and alternatively activated macrophages and cancer cells in order to study mitochondrial adaptation in carcinogenesis.
