Academician Yury Yershov wins 2023 Lobachevsky Medal and Prize

The decision was made public on 28 August.

Lobachevsky Medal and Prize, reinstated by KFU in 2017, is awarded by KFU on odd years for contributions to fundamental and applied mathematics.

Yury Yershov, Chief Research Associate of the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences), was nominated by Novosibirsk State University and Academician Sergey Goncharov for his works on topology for discrete mathematics.

Apart from Yershov, the final round featured 9 other scholars, including 5 from Russia and one each from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Japan, and USA.

Jury chairman, Chair of the Department of Algebra and Mathematical Logic Marat Arslanov notes, “The finalists of the competition represented different areas of mathematical science. The whole spectrum of modern mathematical science was represented at our competition. The contenders for the medal and the prize were outstanding mathematicians from different mathematical centers of the Russian Federation, from the United States of America, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Japan. The work of the jury was very hard, and I am glad that we managed to choose one of the most worthy. The winner was Yury Yershov, a representative of the Siberian school of mathematics. He was nominated for his monograph Topology for Discrete Mathematics. This scientist is the creator of a new direction in discrete mathematics, which has a great future. The competition was quite fierce. Only two votes behind Yershov was a remarkable American mathematician, Professor Turaev. I would like to note that among the contestants there were very talented young scientists, such as the Japanese mathematician Mochizuki and the Russian one, Tyurin. All finalists of the competition are world-class scientists and presented their outstanding scientific results. We are very proud of this!”

The award ceremony is scheduled for early December to coincide with Nikolay Lobachevsky‘s (1792 – 1856) birthday.
