University mourns Professor Maxim Khramchenkov
With deep sadness, the university community regrets to announce the passing of Professor, Doctor of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics, Maxim Khramchenkov, at 68 years of age.
Dr Khramchenkov’s career path was dedicated to mathematical modeling and its applications to the research of natural processes. An alumnus of the Faculty of Physics of Kazan University, he combined fundamental knowledge with immense interest in geology, hydrogeology, and petroleum science.
He worked as a senior research associate, deputy director, and then director of the Research Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics (part of our university). Maxim Khramchenkov then headed the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, the namesake educational unit of KFU. He was also a professor at the department of general geology and hydrogeology, and then headed the department of mathematical methods in geology. Dr Khramchenkov served on the editorial boards of Russian journals Georesursy and Voprosy Atomnoi Nauki i Tekhniki.
Among his research interests were fluid and gas mechanics, filtration and mass transfer in porous media, and interaction of fluids with rocks. He studied processes involving underground water and formation fluids, mineral dissolution and alteration, as well as changes in reservoir properties. Those topics connected fundamental issues of mechanics with practical tasks of mining and environmental protection.
As a continuation of his combined interest in mathematics and geology, the scientist created and led research teams working on complex models of natural systems and software tools for hydrogeology and the petroleum industry. His work facilitated interdisciplinary links and united theoretical research, computational methods, and geological knowledge.
Dr Khramchenkov devoted much effort to fostering new talent by creating new curricula and supervising dissertation research.
The passing of Maxim Khramchenkov is an irreparable loss for Kazan Federal University and the scientific community. His works and heritage are now a part of the history of our university and the foundation for further achievements of his students and colleagues.
