Nuclear physics methods for archeology discussed at conference

The event was organized by KFU and Joint Institute for Nuclear Research on 16 – 20 October.

Kazan University hosts a joint department with JINR – the Department of Nuclear Physics Materials Science. Apart from pure physical research, the department can also be of help in archeology, where nuclear methods are currently widely used.

Vice-Rector for Research Dmitry Tayursky notes, “Such an interdisciplinary project is very apposite for a classical university because it unites experts in humanities and natural sciences. Events like this are important for them to understand each other.”

“One point of interest is studying the sources of metallurgy,” says Ayrat Sitdikov, Director of the Higher School of Historical Sciences and World Cultural Heritage. “It’s also important to conduct isotope research of biological materials, which helps in understanding environmental and migratory processes. We are interested in our local region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.”

The cooperation between KFU and JINR will also result in educational programs with inclusions of nuclear technology studies for the needs of archeology.
