2025 Lobachevsky Medal and Prize awarded to Sergey Ivanov

The ceremony took place on Monday, 1 December, in the Emperor Ballroom.

This year’s recipient is currently employed as Professor of the Saint-Petersburg Branch of the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The ceremony was joined by Prime Minister of Tatarstan Aleksey Pesoshin, Rector Lenar Safin, President of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences Rifkat Minnikhanov, KFU employees, and guests.

The Rector noted that this new iteration of the prize was revived in 2017 and noted, “Nikolay Lobachevsky dedicated 40 years of his life to education and science. For 19 years, he worked as Rector and created his revolutionary theory – Lobachevskian geometry.”

Prime Minister Pesoshin thanked the laureate for his contribution and emphasized that the development of Tatarstan as a center of science would be impossible without fundamental mathematical training.

Sergey Ivanov expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Republic, KFU, the International Jury, and all the involved sides.

The Lobachevsky Medal and Prize are awarded every two years with an attached remuneration of 75,000 USD. Its recipients are commended for contributions to fundamental and applied mathematics. This year, apart from Russia, candidacies were submitted from India, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.

The inaugural edition of the prize saw light in 1895; it was reestablished several times, with the latter being in 2017. Since then, the award was given to Richard Schoen (USA), Daniel T. Wise (Canada), Idzhad Sabitov (Russia), Yury Yershov (Russia), and Sergey Ivanov.
