KFU representatives among winners of 2023 Arbuzov Prize for Young Scientists
The annual award is given for contributions to fundamental and applied chemistry.
The Arbuzov Prize, one of the oldest awards for young scientists in Tatarstan, is held by the Mayor’s Office of Kazan, Kazan Federal University, Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry, Kazan Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Kazan National Research Technological University, Republican Chemical Society, and Council of Young Scientists and Specialists of Kazan.
Among the finalists are Engineer of the Laboratory of Organic Compound Research Bulat Gafiatullin and Senior Lecturer of the Department of High Molecular of Organoelement Compounds Semyon Romanov.
The third place diploma went to Junior Research Associate Dmitry Bolmatenkov. He studies temperature dependencies of vaporization enthalpies. He commented that this parameter is used to optimize distillation, “For a long time, there were no reliable ways to evaluate the dependence of this parameter on temperature. We offered an approach which is significantly better than existing analogues. The results of the study may be useful in the purification of hard-to-volatile compounds, in the deposition of thin films – manufacturing of LED-displays.
The first prize was given to Senior Lecturer Artyom Agarkov – he studies heterocyclic compounds.
“Here we have discovered two new rearrangements, obtained previously unavailable heterocycles, and tested for cytotoxic activity. By doing so, we have identified lead compounds that are not only active against cancer cell lines, but also selective. The main task of modern medicinal chemistry is to create drugs that are selective, because most antitumor drugs today kill not only cancer cells, but also healthy cells,” he explained.
Scientists under 35 years of age are eligible for the competition; the right to nominate belongs to Kazanian universities and research institutions.
