1 December, the birthday of Nikolai Lobachevsky (1792 – 1856), was marked by a traditional biennial ceremony.

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chief Research Associate of the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics Yury Yershov was announced as the winner this past August for his monograph Topology for Discrete Mathematics.

In his greeting, the Rector spoke about four stages of the award’s history, “The historical tradition to award prominent mathematicians with world-level achievements was revived in 2017, which was the Lobachevsky Year at KFU.”

He emphasized the importance of Lobachevsky’s legacy, “This is not only thanks to his discoveries. Being a truly versatile person, Lobachevsky was at the same time successful in scientific work, led the university team, taught, and actively contributed to the infrastructural development of the university. Today Kazan University continues the glorious traditions of mathematics education, paying special attention to strengthening and expanding the fundamental base in mathematics and computer science.”

On behalf of Rais (Governor) Rustam Minnikhanov, Prime Minister Pesoshin congratulated the winner and noted that KFU is one of the national leaders in mathematics and computer science.

Valery Sorokin proceeded to hand over a money prize, which this year is equivalent to 75,000 USD.

Dr Yershov thanked everyone for the honor, “I am in active collaboration with Kazanian mathematicians. Tatarstan is a place where science is indeed cherished. I am very grateful for that. And I wish development and success to one of the oldest and most respected universities in Russia – Kazan University.”
