Rector Ilshat Gafurov and Lobachevsky Medal winner Idzhad Sabitov laid flowers to the bust of Nikolai Lobachevsky

Today marks the 229th anniversary of Nikolai Lobachevsky, famous mathematician, alumnus and Rector of Kazan University in 1827 – 1846.

During the ceremony, Rector Gafurov said, “The name of Nikolai Lobachevsky is very important to the mathematical community of Russia. He was inextricably linked to Kazan and Kazan University. It’s our honor and duty to commend the memory of this great scientist for his invaluable contribution to the global science and to the growth of Kazan University.”

Since this is an odd year, the Lobachevsky Medal and Prize are awarded, and this time it goes to Russian scholar, Professor of Moscow State University Idzhad Sabitov. The ceremony is scheduled later today.

After the flower laying, everyone visited the Lobachevsky Museum (occupying the house where he lived during his tenure as rector).
