Rectors hold traditional year-end meeting with Rais of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov

The Governor talked with local academic leadership at Kazan University today.

Chairman of the Council of Rectors Lenar Safin noted, “At a recent meeting of the Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov with university rectors, a large-scale reform of the higher education system was discussed, which should be continuous and quickly adaptable to changes in the labor market. In science, we are also expected to deliver concrete, practical results aimed at strengthening the country’s technological sovereignty.”

Dr Safin emphasized that such an objective requires systemic work with the government. Tatarstani academics already have some solutions.

“Among our strong suits are medicine, pharmaceutics, life sciences, Earth sciences, geography, humanities, and English language. There are positive movements in history, chemistry, biology, engineering, sociology, psychology, and economics; we are also a constant presence in mathematics, computer science, environmental science, and chemical technology.”

He then spoke in more detail about key projects, the most large-scale of which is Priority 2030.

Another success story 2023 were advanced engineering schools, one of which is Cyber Auto Tech based at KFU’s Naberezhnye Chelny Institute. Overall, there are now five such schools in Tatarstan.

In other good news, KFU is now first in Russia in international student revenue.
