University toured by Prime Minister of Timor-Leste José Alexandre Gusmão

The country is one of the participants of the Russia-ASEAN Summit in Kazan.

The guests were welcomed by Rector Lenar Safin, who spoke about the University’s history, its outstanding alumni and employees, and offered to visit the History Museum.

During the tour, the Prime Minister, who was one of the major contributors to the Timor-Leste independence movement, paid special attention to a display of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) memorabilia.

Deputy Director of the Lobachevsky Library Elmira Amerkhanova then showed unique items from the library’s collection, including historical maps of Southeast Asia and a 19th century copy of the Great Liberation Sutra in Tibetan language.

The guests then proceeded to see the Emperor Ballroom and the Lenin Memorial Classroom, where Xanana Gusmão left a thank you note in a guestbook.

Timor-Leste is the youngest member state of ASEAN, and Russia was one of the first to recognize its independence. The two nations plan to develop cooperation in education, healthcare, oil and gas industry, and other areas.
