Kazan Federal University

Victory Banner planted on KFU’s Main Building

The raising is to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The vexillum will be surmounting the building until after the Victory Day, which is celebrated on 9 May on Russia. Rector Lenar Safin noted that this will now become an annual tradition at the University.

The red banner symbolizes the strength and courage of the Soviet people who persevered the unimaginable horrors of the war to end it in Berlin in 1945. Kazan Unviersity was among the institutions who contributed to the effort both on the battlefield and at home. Hundreds of employees and students volunteered to join the front, and over 400 didn’t return home.

Many institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences were evacuated to Kazan – 33 altogether with 2 thousand employees. The academicians lived and worked at the Main Building, trying their best to help the nation in its time of urgent need.

Meanwhile, studies and non-military research continued at the University as well. Overall, the employees published over 300 papers and reports in the four years of the war.
