Snow Squad recovers remains of two more war heroes

Another Lyuban Expedition ended in Leningrad Oblast, the land where the Soviet 54th Army led fierce battles against the Nazi Germany invasion in 1943.

Snow Squad leader, KFU alumnus Airat Fatykhov speaks about this expedition, which took place from 22 April to 8 May, “Despite complicated weather conditions, we were able to recover remains of two soldiers. We completely removed one of them and buried him in a nearby village of Chudskoy Bor in a war memorial. We had to leave the other one for the autumn expedition because the digging site was very damp.”

The squad members also found signed personal belongings without any remains. They now have to look in the archives for their attribution.

Fatykhov adds that the squad plans to search for a plane and its pilot during the autumn expedition. He commended the students who acquired new skills during this last trip, including water pumping and dip stick use.

A test course was also offered to new members of the search party. They had to complete a trail with special objectives and obstacles, testing both their fitness and intelligence. As a result, two young people joined the Snow Squad.

Snow Squad is large-scale Russian volunteer movement dating back to the 1960s which organizes activities in social outreach, historical heritage, environmental protection, territorial development, assistance to vulnerable communities, and other areas. Despite its original name, the movement now works year-round.
