Fresh graduate Bogdan Goncharenko to use grant funding to create digital doubles of crime scenes

He won 1 million rubles in the Student Startup initiative.

Overall, 23 students of Kazan Federal University – of the total 650 in Russia – won this year.

Bogdan Goncharenko first found out about the Student Startup from his research consultant, Vlada Kugurakova. He was immediately captivated by the idea to develop his project first conceived in the Digital Media Lab. His startup aims to create detailed maps of crime scenes.

The system will create 3D models of crime scenes based on photos with the help of photogrammetry and convert it to virtual reality. According to previous research by the University of South Australia, vritual reality helps compile a comprehensive picture of transpired events. Some countries have already introduced the technology into everyday practice.

Associate Professor Igor Antonov, expert in criminal process and criminalistics, serves as a research consultant for legal issues.

The grant funding will be allocated for equipment and staff.
