Two joint labs launched with Russian Historical Society

A meeting with Society employees was held on 1 November.

The guests were Chairman of the Board of the Russian Historical Society (RHS) Konstantin Mogilevsky and Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Director of the Institute of Archeology of RAS Nikolay Makarov.

As was announced, the first laboratory – Clio Plus – will engage in research on safe educational environments and preservation of traditional cultural values and historical heritage. The second lab – Eastern Section – will digitize and categorize historical archives from Central Asia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey.

Konstantin Mogilevsky then received a Christian Frähn Medal, KFU’s award for contributions to philology and history, on behalf of the team of the RHS. In his lecture, he touched on various aspect of the RHS’s activities, including its lobbying for historical education in universities. Notably, the number of history students in Russia has recently grown; however, there is still a lack of such experts.

“A historian is a universal analyst, a person capable of working with texts and information,” he commented. “We see that historians are in demand in public service, in the media, in analytical departments of Russian companies.”

As of now, the Society has succeeded in increasing the history curriculum for non-historical university majors to 144 academic hours (which means 72 lessons of one-and-a-half-hour each).
