Kazanian chemists celebrate several anniversaries at the Museum of Kazanian Chemical School

The scientists gathered at KFU’s Butlerov Memorial Classroom on 8 December.
2023 marks 160 years of the Museum of Kazanian Chemical School, 195th anniversary of Alexander Butlerov (1828 – 1886), 185th anniversary of Vladimir Markovnikov (1838 – 1904), 120th anniversary of Boris Arbuzov (1903 – 1991), and 175th anniversaries of Flaivan Flavitsky (1848 – 1917) and Vasily Sorokin (1848 – 1919).
Director of KFU’s Museum Complex Svetlana Frolova opened the celebration, “The history of Kazanian chemical school is a road of 200 years. People of various epochs, ethnicities and religions have been united by their passion to uncover the structure of this world’s matter.”
Director of the Institute of Chemistry Marat Ziganshin said, “In 2023, KFU has advanced in global rankings in chemistry. In the Russian Science Citation Index, we are third among Russian universities. We are among the leaders in the thermodynamics of intermolecular interactions.”
This year, a new high school competition, Descendants of Mendeleev, is going to be organized by the University.
Head of the Museum of Kazanian Chemical School Kirill Kanunnikov elaborated on his predecessors, “Notably, among them were prominent local chemists. The first ever museum curator was Aleksey Loman, then Alexander Popov, and then Grigory Glinsky.”
Vasily Sorokin was appointed curator twice; he was also the first KFU educator to read lectures in agricultural chemistry.
Veterans of local science were given letters of appreciation today, among them Professor of Kazan National Research Technological University William Barabanov, Curator of the Museum of Academicians Arbuzovs Natalya Koreeva, and KFU professors Galina Chmutova, Aleksey Zakharov, and Yury Shtyrlin.
