Map of Tatarstan’s recreational potential created by KFU researchers
The report was commissioned by the Institute of Urban Development of Tatarstan.
The project was handled by Deputy Director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences Maria Kozhevnikova and Associate Professor of the Department of General Ecology Vadim Prokhorov.
“Recreational potential is a characteristic of a territory which has properties to be attractive to people. The research was based on scientific research and mathematical methods, taking into account natural, infrastructural and historico-cultural characteristics. On the digital map, the territories were ranked according to their recreational attractiveness. The analysis included data on forests, water bodies, beaches, protected natural reserves, architectural objects, etc.,” says Kozhevnikova.
The analysis showed that recreational potential is most significantly influenced, firstly, by dissected landforms, such as hills, slopes, ravines, elevations, and others; secondly, by their proximity to natural reserves; and thirdly, by the presence of roads.
As a result, territories with the highest potential were advised to conduct a thorough analysis of existing zoning regulations and property rights. If attractive territories are zoned for low-quality use, such as animal farms, waste treatment, warehouses, then it is recommended to reevaluate the regulations. Road and infrastructure planning is also important.
The digital maps will become essential for the most effective territorial planning, adds Kozhevnikova. It’s imperative to coordinate the understanding of environmentalists, authorities, and businesspersons.
