Expert weighs in on what Angara A5 means for the nation

Russia’s newest heavy lift launch vehicle successfully took off from Vostochny Cosmodrome on the eve of Cosmonautics Day.

12 minutes and 26 seconds later, the Orion upper stage separated from the third stage and successfully launched the Gagarinets satellite into low Earth orbit.

“We can say that Angara A5 entered the space service,” notes Head of Engelhardt Observatory Yury Nefedyev. “This heavy lift launch vehicle can deliver dozens of tons of cargo into orbit. It is planned to create a Russian orbital station, which, like the ISS, will move around the Earth. With the help of such heavy rockets it will be possible to bring components for the construction of this orbital station. In addition, it will be possible to implement many new domestic space programs related to the creation of near-lunar stations, exploration of the Moon and deep space”.

According to the scientist, it is also important that Angara A5 is entirely made of Russian components.

“This super-heavy rocket is the best in the world: it is the most reliable in design and the most cost-effective, as it allows to carry a large amount of cargo in one flight. In addition, it runs on environmentally friendly fuel. It is planned that such spacecrafts will become reusable, which is even more profitable and in demand”, emphasizes the scientist.

According to the scientist, the rocket launch was supposed to take place on April 9, but was postponed twice for technical reasons. The command “cancel” was given by smart automation.

The launches of heavy rockets will give a powerful impetus to the development of high-tech sectors of the Russian economy.
