KFU geologists conduct land surveying for the M-12 freeway

A team of the Department of General Geology and Hydrogeology has been commissioned for the works.

The team comprises Department Chair Eduard Korolyov, Associate Professor Ayrat Latypov, senior lecturers Anastasia Garaeva and Ilnur Khuzin, and assistant lecturers Rustem Usmanov and Yekaterina Yabbarova.

The scientists described layer-by-layer geological and lithological differences and fracture sites, created large-scale maps of the development of engineering-geological processes, carried out hydrogeological modeling of the section from the intersection with the R-241 Kazan-Buinsk-Ulyanovsk freeway to the intersection with the Sorochi Gory-Shali freeway.

The M-12 is a part of the Europe – Western China transport corridor. The road’s length will be over 800 km, and the traffic is planned for opening before the end of 2023. An auto trip between Moscow and Kazan will thus be shortened from the average 12 hours to 6.5 hours.

The KFU team’s work is an important element of timely construction and launch of the immense project. This experience can then be used in other surveying commissions on this freeway and similar undertakings.

On 30-31 March 2023, Kazan will host 24th Sergeev Readings; this year’s topic is Fundamental and Applied Questions of Engineering Geodynamics. According to Ayrat Latypov, the conference will feature a paper report on the M-12 works by the Department.
