Institute of Chemistry celebrates 95th anniversary

A meeting was held on 1 October.
Among the guests were Yekaterina Turilova, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs; Rishat Guzeirov, Vice-Rector for Comprehensive Security; Andrei Karasik, Head of the Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry; Oleg Sinyashin, Research Supervisor of the Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry; and many others.
Opening the event, Marat Ziganshin, Director of the Institute of Chemistry, told about the history of its establishment.
The decision to establish the Research Chemical Institute at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Kazan University was made at the 5th Mendeleev Congress on Pure and Applied Chemistry in 1928. On October 1, 1929, it was established by the resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the Russian SFSR. In 2003, based on the decision of the Academic Board of Kazan University, the Butlerov Institute of Chemistry was established.
Vice-Rector Turilova spoke about the uniqueness of the Kazan school of chemistry, whose representatives have made a great contribution to the development of world science.
“The most important thing we have is our people who, regardless of the surrounding situation, do well the work they like,” she reminded.
Next, Dr Ziganshin made a presentation of the Institute. He spoke about research and development, especially noting that in 2023 the Institute organized its in-house production of heterogeneous catalysts for petrochemicals and oil refining.
“Just the other day the first line for the production of composite materials based on superconstructive polymers was launched. These materials successfully function at the temperature of 300-400 degrees and are very useful in modern technologies,” he noted.
Marat Ziganshin also informed that 180 years ago Karl Klaus discovered a new chemical element, ruthenium, at Kazan University.
Anna Gedmina, Deputy Director for Educational and Social Work of the Institute of Chemistry, Associate Professor of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, delivered a lecture dedicated to the great scientist.
Employees and students of the Institute were congratulated by its alumni – representatives of Russia’s biggest industrial companies, such as Sibur, Ammonium, Proton, and others.
The celebration concluded with a chemists’ anthem sung by Institute alumnus Alexander Yefremov.
