Associate Professor Andrey Mikhailov wins Metropolitan Macarius Award

The award was established personally by Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna Macarius in 1867.

The award is given annually for contributions to sciences and humanities – on even and odd years respectively.

In 2023, the nomination was for research in Russian history and history of the Russian Orthodox Church, Russian regional studies, history of Eastern Orthodox peoples, Christian archeology, arts, and popularization of history.

Dr Mikhailov was commended for his book on the life and achievements of Professor Ilya Berdnikov (1839 – 1915). Berdnikov was an expert in church-state relations and taught at Kazan University.

Andrey Mikhailov comments, “It’s wonderful to see your work – undertaken since student years – is seen and valued. It really gives a boost to your willingness to continue researching the topic. It’s motivating to know that many people have demand for it.”

The interviewee plans to soon complete his DSc thesis on church-state relations in the Russian Empire and the modernization of the Russian Orthodox Church during that period.

Dean of the Higher School of International Relations and World History Airat Sitdikov was awarded the same award in 2021 for his concept of the Museum of Archeological Wood (currently open in Sviyazhsk, Tatarstan).
