KFU students win gold at the All-Russian Cyber Battle in Digital Technologies

The team consisted of senior students of the Institute of Physics Sergey Suprotivin (captain), Vladimir Dmitriev, Timur Khakimov, and junior student of the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Information Technologies Timur Khamzin. They were joined by Damir Shakirov from Kazan National Research Technological University.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students of universities who are interested in ethical hacking could take part in the cyber battle, which was held in the format of confrontation between attackers and defenders in the fight for the IT infrastructure of the city of N. The competition lasted 16 hours over two days. During this time, the student attack teams managed to put forth 24 critical events, each of which the defenders were able to investigate.

“‘The Reds hacked this infrastructure, that is, they worked as hackers, and we, the Blue team, investigated these hacks, monitored all actions, including suspicious ones,” explains Dmitriev.

The students themselves expressed their desire to participate in the cyber battle. The initiative was supported by Dmitry Gadelshin, Head of KFU’s Information Security Service, with whom they were interning.

“We have known the guys from the Institute of Physics since the first student cyber battle, which took place this fall in Kazan. There we became friends and decided to represent KFU together at future competitions,” says Timur Khamzin.

In their free time from the tournament, the students explored other areas of the festival, listened to lectures by experienced experts and collected merchandise from the event’s partner companies. In addition, the cyber athletes were able to visit the sightseeing staples of Moscow – Red Square, the Novodevichy Convent, and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

“We live in a rapidly developing digital world, so most of both our personal data and confidential data of an organization or company are stored electronically, accordingly, they are already exposed to some threats. Today there are a lot of cyber attacks that can cause great losses for both the organization and the individual, so cyber security is relevant now and will be in demand for a long time to come,” adds Khamikov.

According to the results of the cyber battle among the defenders, the Blue Water team of Kazan Federal University took the first place. As a prize, the winners were awarded a money certificate for 50,000 rubles.

The tournament was organized by Innostage and Positive Technologies, Russian IT companies specializing in solutions for digital security.
