KFU joins national mRNA research center

Prime Minister of Russia Mikhail Mishustin has signed an order to create a scientific and technological center for the development of mRNA technologies.

The consortium will be created to ensure the development and production of drugs based on mRNA technologies. The work is being carried out on the instructions of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin.

As the Director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology Andrey Kiyasov comments, the proposal was put forth by the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, which will act as the lead organization.

“The question arose about the need for a center for the development of various types of mRNA vaccines. The experience and competencies that Kazan Federal University has are necessary for the implementation of this project. We are pleased to receive high praise from the Gamaleya Center, which created a successful COVID vaccine. It is an honor to be on the list of 17 respected scientific institutions.”

Answering a question about the tasks that will be assigned to the university, the Director notes that this concerns preclinical studies on tumor cell lines. Students of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology will be involved.
