University’s carbon polygon project officially endorsed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education
A meeting was held by Minister Valery Falkov on July 14.
KFU was represented by Rector Ilshat Gafurov, Vice-Rector for Research Danis Nurgaliev, Vice-Rector for Education Dmitry Tayursky, and Director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences Svetlana Selivanovskaya.
During the discussion, the expert council approved roadmaps for the seven previously announced polygons – in Chechnya, Krasnodar Krai, Kaliningrad Oblast, Novosibirsk Oblast, Sakhalin Oblast, Sverdlovsk Oblast, and Tyumen Oblast.
Tatarstan’s bid, suggested as the eighth for the project, was presented by Danis Nurgaliev. He spoke about the planned locations for the polygon, main research topics, prospective projects and events.
The carbon polygon program’s primary goals are to establish a nationwide system of carbon monitoring of ecosystems, which includes collecting and systemizing meteorological and climatic data, creating a system of long-term carbon depositing.
As a result, Kazan Federal University was unanimously selected for inclusion in the carbon polygon initiative.
